Making Up Emma - Dream On

Teresa talks makeup and hair from this week's Dream On...

Most viewers watched the heart-wrenching scene between Emma and Artie on Tuesday’s episode Dream On and felt pangs of sympathy for poor Artie or admiration for the touching way that Emma handled such a delicate interaction. Jayma Mays has the ability to convey more emotion with just a glance from those soulful eyes than some actors can in an entire monologue. Anyway, most people were focused on their meaningful exchange, where Emma has to gently let Artie know that dancing might not be a real possibility for him…

Most people. Not me.

As the resident makeup wench of WWEPW, my job is to watch the episode and dwell on such serious topics as “I hope she used enough mascara this time” and “hmmm…I wonder if that’s Bobbi Brown concealer…” And although I wanted to turn up the lighting in Emma’s office a bit (FLOODLIGHTS!), I can say I was very pleased with the way her makeup looked! YAY EMMA!!

Mr. Pillsbury was about 4 beers in when he signed this report card.

Sadly though, the Awesome Bang Swoosh that Miss Pillsbury is famous for was limp in this scene. I wonder if it’s like the flowers in ET, where they start to wilt if ET is sick…do her bangs start to wilt if her heart is aching for one devastatingly-handsome-but-poor-decision-maker Will Schuester? Because look how excited her hair used to be!

And now, like we saw in Dream On, they were Sad Bangs. They were Heartbroken Bangs. The Swoosh was not a Swoosh…it was a Pssssh. Just a barely-there limp little bang-hang. Emma’s hair has an emotional connection to her state of being. It is straight in this episode because she is telling it to Artie straight. (you like that, huh?) We know that until Will is her man her heart is really not whole, and therefore her bangs won’t be either. Or maybe her curling iron broke, idk. I hope perky-bangs Emma is back soon. GET ON IT, WILL.

I’m guessing the focus might have also been off Emma’s bangs because of the megatron necklace she was wearing. Featuring not one, not two, but THREE layers of embellishments, it was like a Mardi Gras parade around her neck. I can kind of see why, with that kind of jewelry, Emma would tone down the other goings-on of her head, including wearing that softer lipstick. Her style is always simple yet sophisticated.

Overall I was pleased with her (too brief) appearance in Dream On. GET IT PILLSBURY.

They should seriously consider just making the entire show about her.. And throw a post-Cheerio Quinn in for good measure.
