Grazia Interviews Jayma Mays

...and mentions little 'ol me.

When Emma Pillsbury, the school guidance counsellor with a morbid fear of dirt and disarray, first appeared on Glee, you could have been forgiven for not instantly recognising her as a fashion revolutionary. Cute as a button on a pastel cardigan, sure, but a style icon? Yet that’s what she and her superlative sweater-clips have become. The Guardian recently singled Emma out as one of the best-dressed characters on TV: “Those sugar sorbet shades, those ‘50’s-style shift dresses, that endless selection of delicately embellished cardigans: this isn’t a TV character, this is a model for Marc by Marc Jacobs,” they wrote. New York Magazine ran an Emma lookbook, complete with commentary from Glee’s costume designer, Lou Eyrich (who’s won her own Emmy for her brilliant work). And if that wasn’t enough, check out the twinset homages on www.wwepw.com - yup, a website that is indeed called What Would Emma Pillsbury Wear? So we decided to take things one step further and get Jayma Mays, the brilliant actress behind our germophobic heroine, to do ‘70’s-inspired high fashion - styled as you’ve never seen her before. And to tell us how it feels to represent a whole new kind of geek chic. Oh yeah, plus indulge us for a second in dishing the dirt on Glee’s, erm, sex ban.

Grazia - So how does it feel to suddenly become a style icon? You must have been over the moon when you saw the blog What Would Emma Pillsbury Wear?

Jayma - Ha! Actually that is thanks to Lou Eyrich, the Glee stylist, not me. She’s the best-dressed lady you will ever meet. She has such an eye for knowing how to dress different types of people.

Jayma's right - this blog is an homage to Lou's genius, but she's a bit too humble. Could anyone but Ms. Mays wear Emma Pillsbury's clothing so well? She's the perfect muse for the look.

Thanks to the very lovely writers at Grazia for mentioning WWEPW!

Hat tip to Your Daily Dose of Jaymamazing for alerting me to this interview.

WWEPW's New Look!

I love to change blog designs as much as Emma loves to change cardigans.

Lucky for me, my friend Melissa is an amazing web designer. I wouldn't trust WWEPW with anyone except her and her company, Emtwo Web Studios.

And like Emma, I love vintage just as much as I love new things, so I didn't want to lose the original design that Melissa created for WWEPW. So we kicked it back old-school, and Melissa gave me a skinning menu! What's that, you ask?

Simple!

You get to choose which WWEPW you want to see! All you have to do is go to this drop down menu in the sidebar...

...and pick your favorite. Cool, huh? That's Melissa. There's nothing she can't do.

WWEPWers, please give Melissa some love in the comments. Check out some of the great details she added to the new look. And if you're in the market for professional or personal web design, Emtwo Web Studios is the place to go. Thank you for my newest design, Melissa!

YAY, MELISSA! MELISSA, HOORAY!

The Best Glee Fashion Blogs

Not to brag, but WWEPW is one of the very few blogs dedicated to the fashion of Glee. I'm proud to say that I'm in very good company.

Of course, there's my girl Dana - The Possessionista.

Dana has helped me ID some of the most difficult pieces Emma has worn. And, Possessionista is the first source for all things Quinn and Rachel. She offers so much more than just Glee on her site. Fans of The Bachelorette, Gossip Girl, and Pretty Little Liars know that Dana's site is the place to go for IDs from the shows, as well as budget versions of many of the looks. Dana's got something new and exciting on her site every day - if you're not reading it daily, you're missing out!

Recently I stumbled on a LiveJournal community - Glee Style.

The bloggers at this fabulous site very kindly linked back to WWEPW for any fashion IDs they'd found here, and thank goodness. This site is a treasure trove of Glee fashion IDs for every character, but most especially for Kurt fans. It's great to see the guys getting as much attention as the girls out here in the blog world!

Glee Style and WWEPW will be combining powers. Each week I'll be sharing links to my Emma Pillsbury fashion IDs. For all the hardcore Glee fashionistas out there, this site is a must-see. Put it in your Google reader. Add it to your Bloglines. If you have an LJ account, join this community. Subscribe any way you can, because it's absolutely amazing.

Yay, Glee fashion blogs! Glee fashion blogs, hooray!

Happy Anniversary WWEPW!

On October 16, 2009, I decided it might be fun to start a blog about Emma Pillsbury's clothes. I had no idea what was else in store for me.

Connecting with amazing Etsy artists.

A mention from Jayma Mays.

An interview with Michael Hitchcock, my favorite actor.

Loads of giveaways.

An article in the Baltimore Sun.

An interview with Tom and Lorenzo, my favorite bloggers.

A mention in People magazine.

Two amazing friends and contributors: Teresa and Nicolle.

Fashion challenges, games, and contests galore.

The challenge to ID nearly every item worn by Emma Pillsbury on Glee.

All of the emails, questions, tweets and comments I've received over the last year from all of you have made writing WWEPW more fun than I could have imagined. Thanks, WWEPWers, for making this first year so great!

WWEPW in People!

What WHAT!
Photo from theGLEEKspot

One hour at the grocery store and this happens.

I'm getting all kinds of texts and tweets and they're all saying something about People Magazine, but I have no idea what they're talking about. Did naked pictures of Matthew Morrison surface? Is Stephen Tobolowsky stalking Josh Groban in real life? IS ANTOINE DODSON MAKING A GUEST APPEARANCE ON GLEE? I was getting very excited.

I never expected to see THIS! People mentioned WWEPW! What a thrill!

Thanks for the shoutout, People Magazine! All together now...

YAY, PEOPLE! PEOPLE, HOORAY!

Thanks from WWEPW

My head is sort of swimming this week, ever since Go Fug Yourself mentioned WWEPW.

Regular WWEPWer Emma, who writes the blog Gleeklopedia, was featured on FOX Chicago News this week! I was so impressed with her on-screen poise - are you sure you're in high school, Emma? Thank you so much for mentioning WWEPW in your interview! Take a look:

Earlier this week, I got the loveliest email from Destri, founder and editor of a really great site called The Mother Huddle.

I adore blogs like this. Communities of people with a common interest, supporting one another and sharing ideas. Fabulous. Destri asked me if I would contribute an entry to her Bullet List feature, and I was honored to oblige! Visit Destri's site where you'll find my list of Ten Things We Can Learn From Emma Pillsbury, and so much more. Thanks, Destri!

Blogger Lindsey Reiser from Chicago Now mentioned WWEPW and shares her picks for some great Emma-worthy vintage finds on Etsy in this article: Get Emma Pillsbury's Glee-ful vintage look. Thanks, Lindsey!

Stats trackers are a glorious thing. From another linkback to WWEPW, I discovered this marvelous site: Aiming Low. Their description: "We are a group of women/moms/bloggers/friends/writers that believe that there’s no shame in serving mac and cheese for dinner three nights in a row, Febreeze was created to make a questionably clean shirt smell ready-to-walk-out-the-door-fresh and that slack isn’t a way of life…it’s an art." Brilliant, right? Smart girls FTW!

I'd forgotten to link this article when it was published, but better late than never! Kate Youde from The Independent interviewed me for this piece...alas, all my babbling didn't make the final cut, but she did mention WWEPW. Good stuff in here from Lou Eyrich. It's Chic to be a Gleek: Why everybody wants to join the Glee club circuit Thanks for a great chat and a great article, Kate!

Another cool mention by Kitty Felde from Southern California Public Radio and an older one from Metro News Canada by Rea McNamara. One more mention from TV.com's Stefanie Lee.

One more shoutout to the fabulous Tim & (My Mom Calls Me) George from KISS107 in Cincinnati. They aired my interview with them on Tuesday morning and through the magic of radio, I didn't sound like a yammering fool. These guys are a ton of fun and I appreciate them taking the time to chat with me about Glee and Emma's fashion!

And before I forget! I've launched a new site, which is still very much in its infancy, but a TON of fun to work on, thanks to some really amazing people. Check it out! What Would Glee Wear?

Oy, before this post comes across like a bunch of egomaniacal horn-tooting, here's my point. It's important to say thank you. I really can't tell you how awesome it is to know so many people enjoy reading WWEPW. I've been leaving comments all over the blogosphere, thanking anyone I find who has a kind word or two to say about this site. For me, that's what this whole blogging thing is about. Connecting with people. Go visit one of your favorite blogs, maybe one where you just lurk, and leave a comment. I guarantee you'll put a smile on that blogger's face.

It can't be said enough. Thank you.

Zoinks!

Wow. WWEPW has pretty much exploded in the last week.

First, Tim and George from Kiss107 in Cincinnati mentioned me on their blog, and the next thing I knew, I was doing an interview with them for the radio. Me! On the radio!

Yesterday, a momentous thing happened. The Fug Girls mentioned my blog, and OH HAI THAT IS THE HOLY GRAIL OF FASHION BLOG MENTIONS, so I was pretty much on cloud 9. I have been reading The Fug Girls forever. Sharp fashion sense and quick, snarky wit. Yes, please and then some.

I really appreciate all the nice things people have been saying about WWEPW. Thanks so much to Tim & George and The Fug Girls for your kind words!

And welcome to any new readers who may have come along via Kiss107 in Cincinnati or Go Fug Yourself! I hope you enjoy my little corner of the internet!

A Gleeful Wedding

Well, here's some news. I ran off and got married today. Yep, I did.

Recently my partner of 7 years and I decided we were going to get married. Neither of us wanted a big to-do or a long engagement, so we called up a local officiant, had her meet us at the county courthouse, and we were married around 9:00 this morning.

I just thought you all should know that Glee was, indeed, a part of our day. I joked that, unlike Ken Tanaka, my man does not have 74 flaws as of yesterday. He joked that he thought about presenting me with a cubic zirconia because he knew how affected I was by Blood Diamond.

Without going into (somewhat embarrassing) detail, I'll share with you all that we met 7 years ago because of a television show, and I'm happy to say not much has changed. I'm fairly certain that our "honeymoon" will have something to do with a trip to New York City in May to see the Glee cast perform at Radio City Music Hall, and I wouldn't be surprised to open a box and find "a sweater that makes me look homeschooled."

This post doesn't have much to do with Emma's fashion, but I wanted to share a little bit about myself with all of you, who have made this blog so much fun for me. As much as I love this dress:

I wouldn't trade my little surprise wedding with this one

for the world.

We're vegans for crying out loud! :)

WWEPW's New Look!

Attention WWEPW readers! We have a new look!

RSS readers, click on over to the blog and see!

This fabulous design was created by my friend Melissa who, with her husband Sean, owns this company:

Emtwo Web Studios
Melissa has designed several sites for me, and every single time, she comes up with something creative, original, and special. If you ever need any web design services, Emtwo is the place to go. They can do anything (and I do mean anything) from small business websites, personal blogs, professional blogs, development and migration. They really are amazing.

I couldn't have dreamed up a more perfect design for WWEPW if I tried. Thank you, Mel, for this incredible design!

For more information, visit Mel's website: Emtwo Web Studios or follow Emtwo on Twitter!

Jayma Mays Mentions WWEPW

Well. Here's something I didn't expect to read today. Or ever.

From Gail Pennington's article "At fox party, close encounters of the Sue kind" in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch:

The “Glee” cast turned out in a big way, marking their Season 2 pickup earlier in the day. I was also squished, at one point, against Jayma Mays, who plays prim guidance counselor Emma Pillsbury on “Glee” and told me about a blog, What Would Emma Pillsbury Wear, that celebrates her character’s wardrobe.

Blink. Blink blink.

Let me read that again, oh, forty thousand times.

Yep. It says what I think it says.

But! But! What did she say EXACTLY? I want to know everything! Pass me a note in third period!

Basically I've worked it out that it went down in one of two ways. This way:

"...and there are some REALLY crazy fans out there. One woman writes a blog about every single thing I wear!"

Or this way:

"...and there's even a really great blog called 'What Would Emma Pillsbury Wear?' dedicated to Emma's wardrobe! Isn't that just SO CLEVER AND FANTASTIC?"

I'm going with the latter, folks. Definitely the latter.

Thanks to Gail Pennington at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch for the mention, and for completely making my day.

April Rhodes Signed My CD

This weekend, we went to New York City to see Kristin Chenoweth appearing in a play called Love, Loss and What I Wore.

Take note: a true sign of devotion is when someone agrees to sit through a show about the significance of clothing in womens' lives, stand at the stage door in the freezing cold, and endure endless high-pitched squealing sounds for several hours, just so you can meet Kristin Chenoweth and get one of these:

That's love, people.

What Would Emma Pillsbury Wear?

When Emma Pillsbury appeared on Glee, I sat up and took notice.

Who was this cardigan-clad darling with a penchant for plastic gloves and antiseptic wipes? That jewelry! Those shoes! In an instant, I was hooked on all things Emma. Join me as I scour the internet for her (and ultimately my) dream wardrobe.
